The vows we hear at weddings and remember at anniversaries are significant—“I take you to be my wife … I take you to be my husband.” The commitments we make are rooted in the unique relational status of the couple. When God vows, “I will be their God, and they will be my people,” he is articulating the covenant relationship marriage points to.
